Google Gives Other Rankings More Visibility

Now that the masses have access to Google’s newly redesigned results pages, it’s time to consider this in an SEO light if you have not already been considering it.

Google has had its search option available for about a year, but they have not been in the face of the user like the newly redesigned SERP is. With this new design, users don’t have any choice but to notice the options that are available. It’s not too different from Bing or Yahoo in that respect (Danny Sullivan notes that Ask pioneered this design). The difference is that way more people search with Google on a regular basis (in fact, last month Google reportedly dominated the search market by even more than usual).

SEO Strategies and Increased Engagement from Searchers

The new SERPs may shake up SEO efforts, simply because users will start going to the different options Google provides them, taking them to different sets of results. Now that the options are in the limelight, users are more likely to use them.

Yahoo tells us when they added features to their left-hand navigation bar, engagement increased. “We’ve been steadily adding more filtering options and relevant search suggestions to our left-hand navigation bar…and have seen engagement and click-throughs for those features double over the past seven months.” I can’t imagine why Google wouldn’t also see an engagement increase for certain features that are now more visible.

It’s going to come down to evaluating the different options for any given query that you wish to rank for, and focusing efforts upon those. I’ll refer back to the article I posted shortly after Google launched its search options in the first place you can find some tips in that. The same general thinking still applies, but it just got more important.

New SERPs Make Social Even More Important

The options in the left panel pull from “everything” - classic Google results (universal, organic, paid, etc.), blogs from Google Blog Search, Books from Google Books (which includes magazines), Images from Google Image Search, News from Google News, Maps from Google Maps, Shopping from Google Product Search, Videos from Google Video (which includes videos from YouTube and other sources), and Updates from Google’s real-time search.

That last one is of particular note, because before users generally only saw Google’s real-time search in action on select newsy queries unless they hunted them down. Real-time search for any query is now much more accessible, which makes real-time search a bigger deal for search marketing (here’s some tips for getting found in real-time search). Here’s how Google ranks tweets.

Social interactions are becoming more important. The new SERPs also place much more emphasis on social search results. The same goes for location. You’ll notice “nearby” is one of the options. Discussions is another option. Google appears to draw from a variety of sources for this one, but it stands to reason that engaging in conversation throughout the web has some value to Google’s results. There are definitely a lot of results from forums in these results - another reason forum participation can be a valuable use of your time. Forums and Q&A are actually a couple of sub-options, but I’ve seen blog posts in the discussions results too.

Emphasis on Diversification of Where You’re Ranking in Google

What it boils down to is that ranking in all of Google’s different search engines has become even more important for getting traffic from Google. Here are some tips for that. I expect traffic for sites listed in any of these to increase as a result of Google’s New SERP. Keep in mind that Google has been testing this for a significant amount of time. If you think Yahoo was seeing increased engagement, imagine what Google will attract.

I would watch for Google to add more options to the left-panel at any given time. Though they have already experimented a great deal with this layout, I expect we’ll see a lot more tweaking as time goes on.

Do you think Google’s new SERPs will increase your traffic?

I am sure by now you have a little about social media or Facebook/Twitter but do now know how to use it. In fact Obama (president of USA) won his election by focusing mostly marketing  through social media. Even Malaysia in the past election used a lot of social media and is currently the alternative government channel of reaching out to their fans.

So if the government is actively using social media for themselves, how about your business? Are your competitor online in Facebook already competing for their market share in the social media.

Just to summarize what social media can do for your business:
1  You can share expertise and knowledge on sites like LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook

2  You can master these tools very quickly, and proft from them in a fast web enviroment

3  Your own customers can brag about how good your business is

4  You can bridge the gap to customers who don’t even know you exist, but would likely use your company

5 You can keep track about what people are talking about your business and brand (good or bad)

6. You can build a network of fans/followers who are hungry to know more about your business

7. You could build your brand in a very much cost effective way compared to traditional print advertising. Think owning your own TV station in Youtube or radio station in Podcast.

There are probably easily 20 more benefits and if I were to explain everything, I could probably write an ebook!

A recent survey on the social media powerhouse facebook noted over 300 million people currently use it. 300 million is a lot of people to tap into for business. And even if only half those people were active—and the number is likely more—the potential is huge. There are millions on the growing Twitter. LinkedIn is becoming an even clearer business social media
site. YouTube gets 1 billion hits every single day!

In Malaysia alone it is estimated over 5 million Internet users who has facebook account and watches youtube daily! Now do you see the potential of marketing your products or business there? How much of that market do you want to own? Can you afford not to take part and just watch as your competitors start utilizing these social media and leaving you behind?

SO how do you make money? You get known. Many online buyers might not even know you exist. There are so many companies online right now—there are millions of sites and billions of pages—un-less you get ranked very highly on Google and Yahoo, you will still have to invest capital into other marketing efforts. Email marketing is very powerful, and combined with social media marketing is a better choice at any stage, whether you’re just beginning to get online and starting your business or even if you’re established.

Here are some examples how I helped my customers use social media. Do you know you can target demographics, age group, gender and even education level? How cool is that for targeted marketing? Here are some tips you can implement immediately as I always advice my customers.

1. find out who your buyers are by inviting them to join you on social media sites like Twitter and face-book. by doing so, you gain at least some info on who they are. You might notice mostly 40-60 year old men buy your expensive video games with high end graphics, but that teenage girls are actually the ones who buy in the most volume from your role playing games.

2. Use Twitter to keep in touch, sell them on new services, ask for products they might want to see more of, and products they feel aren’t worth the money.

3. Use facebook or a Yahoo Groups forum to be more friendly with your buyers. Video gamers are going online to play games by the millions, so you can set up pages for them via groups, forums, or social media tools like facebook. You can even post new screen images of your games (or if you are selling something else too of course)

4. Finally, you want to know what they can afford. If your buyers are mostly the elite, people with bigger wallets, you  may see different opportunities than if they were penny pinching people on low wage jobs. It just depends on their education and vocation, and by fnding these out you gain great knowledge.

Business to consumer is the king of social media, but business to business cannot be ignored. Most of these examples were focused on b2C, which is the biggest market, selling products and services directly. If you focus on b2b, you can sometimes earn more. The same strategies apply. business owners and CEOs are using social media tools more than ever to fnd new partners for business enterprises. And some businesses purchases will make you more than any single customer will ever make you. It’s not all clear yet where social media will go, but I see one of the best things it offers you is simply an ability to fnd out who is buying from you. Instead of getting their emails—which is still good—or by having them fll out a form—which is good but rarely works—you can make buying from you more enjoyable and learn to keep customers over long periods. Social media is the key to all that.

Internet Marketing Success Story

Having done that, I would like to share real life examples of business I am continuous working now to give you a good idea how Internet marketing may help your business.

1. Cosmetic Business
I worked very closely with Arissa Studios Cosmetic. This is fairly new make up business and believe me one of the hardest business to get into. I soon realised girls are very particular choosing their cosmetic brand and they rarely change once they are comfortable with a certain brand. So how can this new business without any marketing budget to compete with those big cosmetic brands who can splash millions of dollars monthly to promote their brand. Welcome to the power of Internet.

One thing you must realised is big players who spend millions of dollars on advertising on the Television, radio are neglecting the Internet today especially in Malaysia. However most teens and those in the range of twenties to late thirties are using the Internet to search and almost everyone who has access to Internet will be searching for something. To summarize it, I spent time understanding how these potential customers are using the Internet and I optimize Arissa website how to rank highly with these keywords. End results, more visibility, more credibility and best of all, more profit through online marketing.

The website also collects new customers information every time they surf on it, and be able to do email marketing to build relationship with customers. So at any time Arissa decided to give a crazy sales, the loyal subscribers will be rushing to buy it because they know it is a bargain. How are you maintaining relationship with your customers today? You don’t have to always gain new clients but understand the yearly value a customer brings to your business. I realised many business owners do not know the value of retaining and promoting to their existing customers.Believe me when I say this; it is easier to sell to someone who bought from you and experienced your service or products rather than selling to a stranger.

Is that it? In fact there are more to it. This year for 2010, Arissa will soon launch the first free video network on teaching girls how to make up via Youtube. One step further and wanting to compete against all those big cosmetic brand who spends millions a month advertising, Arissa will launch free make up tips for everyone to learn.

Now think of this for a moment, first, would you rather purchase from someone who actually takes time to build relationship with you and secondly, would you rather buy from someone who adds value to your life?

So Internet Marketing is not just designing a website and hoping someone sees it and calls you and buys from you. That is like striking a lottery. Internet marketing is a must for every business now because you need to move with changes. Gone were the time promotion was done when boys ran from one town to another shouting the latest updates on news or by using pigeons. Then the printing revolution came about and we had newspaper and yellow pages. But then again, we soon realised that if you have the $$, only then you can compete with advertisements and nowadays who actually believe the papers? We rather believe reviews from peers.
Then the next thing came out, the Internet. Then came out social media where we can interact with each other live. So which stage are you in still?

Is the Internet For You?

Some of you might be wondering is Internet really for my business? How can Internet helped my business? You will probably  be thinking oh Internet business is not for me as I nothing to sell online or you might have the impression that Internet marketing is all about shopping cart.
One of the most common question I face is “what actually you do har?” In this article, I would not mention what I do but instead I’ll be sharing how Internet can help YOUR business.

1. You Can Reach a Wider Base of Customers

True enough, when every time someone searches online, they are looking for something. Do you know how many people are searching for your products or services online?  No one in the right mind will go to Google and type in nonsence. Everytime someone uses Google, they have a specific thing they want to search. Whether it is porn, product review, or comparing a holiday package, they are looking for something. You can position yourself on the first page of Google when someone is searching for your services and products. On each Google page, they are 10 listings shown, are you there or your competitor is? The best thing about Google is they don’t care how big or small your business is. As long as you know and give what Google wants, you can dominate the 1st page of  Google listing when a potential customer is searching for your products/services.

2. Expand and Cement Your Branding

KFC, McDonalds, Nokia, Digi and Celcom have one thing in common. They spend billions of dollars on advertising to shove their branding up our ass. Whether you like it or not, you see their brands everywhere  on television, radio and even billboard.
Now how many of you actually watches television now? Radio probably when you are driving and even less reading hard copies of newspaper now. Statistics shows that if newspaper today do not have online presence, they will be going out of business.
Those in the age group of 30s and below and even early 40s spend most of their time online. Best thing of all, if you don’t have billions of dollars online to do your branding like those big timers do, you can spend hundreds to get the same even better impact than those bigger guys. Facebook, Twitter, social medias, Youtube are some places where Malaysians spend lots of time and you can expand and cement your branding in those places. Big names do not know how or can’t be bothered, so it is up to you to dominate your brand and market online. The time is now, not many people are doing it and there are so few competitions online today.
Government is always helping and encouraging us to use broadband and faster connection line, handphones today are equipped with online capabilities such as 3G and 3.5G so the technology is ready but are you ready for online shift?
Even banks today are doing everything online, you can do anything online with your banking system except put in $$.

3.Keep in Touch With Your Customers

Today, sadly people are no longer loyal. They change job easily and brands like no other business because we are spoilt for choice. Good news is, you can automate your online system to keep in touch with your customers via email, videos and social medias. If you today do not take care of your customers, someone else will. Remember customers are so spoilt for choice and if you do not have a presence online, you will soon be like the dinasours.
Have a wonderful day ahead!
